About
Established in 2000, the AWDF is a pan-African grant-making organization that supports the realization and fulfillment of African women's rights through funding autonomous women's organizations across the continent. As a feminist fund, AWDF is dedicated to amplifying and celebrating African women's voices, combating harmful stereotypes, and promoting African women as agents of change. Their support extends beyond grant-making to include capacity building, knowledge sharing, and movement building.
Eligibility
- Organization must be based and headquartered in Africa (not registered outside Africa)
- Women-led: Director/CEO and Board Chair must identify as female or gender-diverse
- At least 70% of all staff and board must identify as female or gender-diverse
- Stated commitment to women's rights/gender equality in mission/vision
- Generally registered for at least 3 years (exceptions for newer organizations led by marginalized groups)
- Not-for-profit entities only (no profit-making organizations)
- Organization must primarily operate in Africa
- For first-time applicants: Must provide reference letters
- Must have basic organizational systems/structures and bank account
- Financial statements required (audited or unaudited for last 3 years)
- For Small Grants: Must be recommended by larger AWDF grantee or respected community member
